WHAT IS THE legO® SERIOUS PLAY® METHOD

In short, it is a facilitated problem-solving and solution-creating method. It is based on a number of theoretical fields ranging from neuroscience, overplay, and psychology to organizational behavior and leadership. (video below)

It all started when… (or who invented legO® SERIOUS PLAY®?)

At the end of the 1990’ies, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen got an idea, a vision of a different way of leading. He had always seen the LEGO brick as a language, as a way of unlocking human potential, and now he wanted to bring it from the kid’s room to the board room. He furthered this idea in fruitful conversation with two business school professors.

The next step was to turn the idea into something that actually works. The company Executive Discovery (ED) was created with the purpose of developing the method. Bart Victor, one of the professors continued his close involvement, the other continued his research in fields related to the method.

Robert Rasmussen an expert in learning and Development, and Head of R&D in the educational division was already involved in the conversations at this point. He was now brought in to manage ED. His key task was to develop the method and the facilitator training. He was faced with turning the idea into something that actually worked. Trivium partner Per Kristiansen joined shortly after, and together with the rest of the team in ED they developed the method, training of facilitators, and the business model.

The very first facilitator training was in September 2001, and among the participants was Jens Rottbøll, Partner in and co-founder of Trivium.

ED was later merged into LEGO Company. Per Kristiansen stayed involved as Global Head of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY until he left LEGO.

The method is today delivered through a global community of facilitators. LEGO Company’s only role is protecting the brand, and selling the special LEGO SERIOUS PLAY kits
